Naj živi slovenščina!

We must put off our celebration of Prešeren

By First page

After last year’s online celebration of the anniversary of the Slovene poet, France Prešeren, we much hoped to get together in person this year, as we have done for so many years in the past.

Regrettably, we have decided this is not possible due to continuing restrictions and uncertainties over Covid-19. So we have abandoned our tentative plan to hold a Prešeren Večer on 5th February in London.

When we can open up again, as we surely must eventually, we plan to hold another celebration. Not just for the great Slovene poet, but also to mark the erection of the new Slovene hayrack (kozolec) in Henley-on-Thames. The kozolec has been made by craftsmen in Slovenia and shipped in pieces to Henley. There they are now stored.

We are now working to arrange for the craftsmen to come to England to put it up. Not easy either, but that day will come!

Keep well everybody.

The kozolec arrives in Henley-on-Thames!

By First page

At last! Here is the new traditional Slovene hayrack just arrived at its new home in Henley-on-Thames. Slovenian craftsman Damjan Bajc from Trebnje designed and built it in his workshop. It was dismantled for transport kindly arranged by the Slovenian company Trimo. At the end of the month, Damjan and three other craftsmen will come over from Slovenia to erect it.

With financial help from benefactors and the Slovenian Government’s Office for Slovenians Abroad, the British-Slovene Society has arranged for the kozolec to be installed in Henley, which is twinned with Bled in Slovenia. These traditional hayracks can be seen in many parts of Slovenia, and are a unique feature of its culture. This one emulates the well-known Lah kozolec in Domžale.

Two years ago, the kozolec which stood in the Oxford Arboretum for the past 20 years had to be dismantled, because it fell into disrepair and the Arboretum no longer had space for it. It had been the gathering place for the British-Slovene Society’s annual summer picnic. The new hayrack in a field on the outskirts of Henley will soon be ready for a long-awaited resumption of festivities!

A Carol Service once more!

By First page

The British-Slovene Society returned to the Church of St. Andrew-by-the Wardrobe in London on 10th December to celebrate our annual service of carols and readings after a year’s break due to Covid.

Observing guidelines for tests, masks and distancing, nearly 100 people joined in a service organised by Catherine King, Kaja Pečnik and Mateja Šömen. Kaja and Mateja gathered a magnificent choir and sang some solo parts themselves.

The Lakeland Voices from Sedbergh, twinned with Zreče in Slovenia, came down from the north to add their joyful voices to the celebration.

Afterwards the congregation enjoyed wine kindly donated by the Slovenian Embassy, and mountains of potica.

A collection raised £202 for the Barka charity for people with special needs, which we support in Slovenia.

This Friday, 10th December, 6:30 pm: come to the Carol Service!

By First page

After having to go online last year, the British-Slovene Society invites you to join in our annual Carol Service in person this Friday.

Our Trustees have developed a great new programme to celebrate this opportunity to come together again. Wine and potica will be served at the end.

We’ll meet in our usual location: Church of St. Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe, close to Blackfriars Tube station.

A couple of points:

– Wrap up warm. The church this year has reduced heating.

– Wear a mask inside the church.

– Although it is not a legal requirement, we ask you to do a Covid-19 test before you come. If the result shows positive, please stay away.

We look forward to seeing you this Friday!

Christmas Carol Service on Friday 10th December 2021

By First page

The BSS warmly invites you to our annual Carol Service on Friday 10th December 2021, at 6:30 pm. After last year’s online-only celebration, this year we are informed by the church that we can again meet in person. For this festive get together, we will gather as before in the church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe, Queen Victoria Street and St. Andrew’s Hill, City of London, EC4V 5DE. Built by Sir Christopher Wren, this beautiful church is well worth a visit in its own right.

Do come and join in our service of carols and readings in English and Slovene. Afterwards there will be a chance to catch up with friends over potica (offered by the Society) and Christmas drinks (courtesy of the Embassy).

There is no charge but a collection is taken to support the work of the Barka charity in Slovenia.

Nearby underground stations are Blackfriars, St Paul’s and Mansion House.

You are invited to take a lateral flow test prior to attending, where possible, and not to attend in the case of a positive result, or if displaying Covid-19 symptoms.

If you can’t make it in person, for the first time we are hoping to live stream the service…… More on this later.

Young Slovenes celebrate St. Martin’s Day in Cambridge

By First page

Over 40 young Slovenes in leading-edge jobs in the UK or studying at Cambridge or elsewhere spent a rousing afternoon celebrating St. Martin’s Day on 6th November 2021 in a village hall just outside the university city.

The gathering was organised by VTIS (v  tujini izobraženi Slovenci). A few participants brought freshly-fermented Slovene wine to taste, as is the custom on this day. The Embassy of Slovenia in the UK kindly donated bottles of earlier Slovene vintages, and Kaja Pečnik from the Embassy was there in person.

Miha Pipan cooked up a Slovene meal befitting the occasion — mushroom soup, jota, deep-fried breaded chicken, home-baked bread and strudel. Gorgeous!

Joining the celebrations were also members of the British-Slovene Society, who travelled in from Milton Keynes and Oxford.

St. Martin’s Day with Slovene food and wines, Cambridge, 6th November

In Slovenia, St. Martin’s Day (Martinovanje) marks the day when the must of the grapes traditionally turns to wine and is ready for drinking. For the work of farmers it marks the end of autumn and beginning of winter.

The event will start at 1 p.m. at Quy Village Hall near Cambridge (CB25 9AB) which is easily accessible by bus or car (free parking at the site).
