Poems and dialects at Štanjel Castle

By 13 June 2026No Comments

In the impressive surroundings of the tastefully restored Štanjel castle, made possible by the vision of Občina Komen and Mayor Erik Modic with EU-funding, guests were treated to a varied and fascinating afternoon of poems and dialects (writes BSS Trustee James Walker).

After a guided tour of the state-of-the-art and highly interactive museum highlighting the Slovene language and its many dialects, guests were able to hear six poets read their own poetry and then a translation into another language. Scottish Gaelic, Scots, English, Slovene and a wee taste of the Primorska dialect were all on the menu.

This excellent cultural exchange was clearly enjoyed by the poets and the audience alike.

The event was organised and supported by the Municipality of Komen, ORA Krasa in Brkinov, the British Embassy, the Edwin Morgan Trust, the Centre for Slovenian Literature and the Slovenian Book Agency.
