Prešeren Evening with Vlado Kreslin on 6 February in London

Reception with drinks from 6.30 pm, dinner at 7.20 pm.

This year, we are delighted and privileged to welcome as our special guest Vlado Kreslin, well-known Slovene singer, composer and poet.

Join us for the dinner, chat and networking in the company of Slovenes and friends of Slovenes. Let’s celebrate together and honour the great poet France Prešeren.

As usual, we will have a tombola with attractive prizes. The first prize is a washing machine by Gorenje!

There was hardly a space left at the annual British-Slovene Society’s annual Carol Service in the beautiful Wren church of St. Andrew by the Wardrobe in London on 11th December.

For the first time this year, the event was organised by the Society’s new Trustee, Nadia Špendal. Her two children read Lessons, sang with the choir and took donations afterwards for the Barka charity, which looks after people with special needs in Slovenia. This year, participants donated £319.

Nadia’s parents flew in the same day with a large consignment of fresh potica from Slovenia for the gathering after the service. All gone! As on previous occasions, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in the UK kindly donated wine.

Slovenia’s Prime Minister Miro Cerar makes an official visit to the U.K.

On 19th November, Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar paid an official visit to London, during which he met Prime Minister David Cameron and the Mayor of the City of London Lord Mountevans.

At a reception given by the Slovenian Embassy, Dr Cerar said his meeting with Mr Cameron was excellent. They discussed Britain’s proposals for reforming the European Union, and how to resolve the migrant crisis in Europe.

Dr Cerar joked that he realised that Mr Cameron was a tough character when he took an early morning swim in an ice-cold pool on a visit to Slovenia earlier this year.

Pat Priban has passed away

It is with great sadness that we must inform members of the passing of Pat Priban on 28th October. She had been at the Royal Brompton Hospital with a chest infection since 8th September.

We all remember Pat as a nice and lively presence, always next to her Slovene husband Ian at our events and supporting the British-Slovene Society since its beginnings. It is hard to believe we will not see her any more.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Ian and his family.

The funeral will be on Wednesday 18th November at 11.20 a.m. at Mortlake Crematorium, Kew Meadow Path, Townmead Rd, Richmond, TW9 4EN.

Christmas Carol Service

The BSS warmly invites you to our annual Carol Service on the 11th of December 2015, at  7 pm.  This is our regular festive get together which is held in the beautiful church of St Andrew by the Wardrobe, Queen Victoria Street and St. Andrew’s Hill, City of London, EC4V 5DE.

The church, which was built by Sir Christopher Wren is a wonderful historic building and well worth a visit in its own right.  Please come and join in our carol singing in English and Slovene. We are pleased to welcome back the London Gallus Consort choir conducted by Paul Brisby.

Catch up with friends after the service as there will be potica (offered by the Society) and Christmas drinks (courtesy of the Embassy).

There is no charge but a collection is taken to support the work of the Barka charity in Slovenia.

Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek and former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, will discuss Europe’s future at the event moderated by Croatian philosopher Srečko Horvat. Followed by a Q&A session.

Slavoj Žižek, regarded as ‘the most dangerous philosopher in the West’ (The New Republic), and Yanis Varoufakis, self-described ‘erratic Marxist’ and economic ‘rock-star’ (Business Insider and other publications), met in Croatia in 2013. They have never appeared together on the public stage – until now.

Take your seat to hear them discuss the urgent task of building a different and more democratic Europe.

Starting in October 2015 SSEES UCL will run evening courses of Slovene language at the beginners’ and upper intermediate levels on Wednesday and Thursday  evenings at 6.30 pm.

These small interactive courses develop conversation skills without losing sight of the fundamentals of grammar. They are ideal for anyone nterested in the rich culture and unique language of Slovenia.

Shirlie Roden: Simply Slovenia Suite

Our Trustee Shirlie Roden and the Symphonic Orchestra Cantabile will perform the Simply Slovenia Suite in Slovenia: on 7 August at Ribniski grad in Ribnica, and on 8 August in Dvorec Lanthieri in Vipava. Both concerts will start at 8 pm. Most of the lyrics and songs were written by Shirlie Roden. The concerts are dedicated to Slovenia and its people, who inspired the author.

Down by the Hayrack: British-Slovene Oxford Picnic

Some 40 people gathered on 28th June for the annual British-Slovene picnic by the Slovene kozolec (hayrack) at the Oxford Arboretum. They came not only from Oxford, but from London, Southampton, Bristol, Wales and other parts of the country. Among those attending was Slovenian Ambassador Tadej Rupel and his family.

Plenty of Slovene sausages, potica and gibanica, as well as Slovene wines (donated by the Ambassador) and Pimms No. 1, kept the party going with a swing. it was difficult to leave when the park closed its gates at 5 pm.

Children were not allowed to climb the hayrack because it is not safe. Hope it will be repaired by next year.

They will take place at the School of Slavonic & East European Studies at University College London at 16 Taviton Street, London, WC1H 0BW.

These small interactive courses develop conversation skills without losing sight of the fundamentals of grammar. They are ideal for anyone interested in the rich culture and unique language of Slovenia.

Enrolment will be open in August.
