Slovenian author Suzana Tratnik is the Slovenian Embassy’s writer-in-residence in London this month. Two dates for your diaries:

Slovenian Lesbian Literature: Four Voices
Gay’s the Word Bookshop is delighted to be hosting an evening of poetry and short stories with the Slovenian Embassy at Gay’s the Word Bookshop on Friday 15th November at 7pm. Organised by their writer-in-residence, Suzana Tratnik, who has invited poets Kristina Hočevar and Vesna Liponik and fellow short story writer Nataša Sukič from Ljubljana to read from their work, translated into English.

A limited edition chapbook, Four Voices, has been created especially for the event with commentary on contemporary lesbian literature and working in translation. We will also have Suzana Tratnik’s Games with Greta and Other Stories on sale that evening. All welcome.

The BSS warmly invites you to our annual Carol Service on Friday 6th December 2019, at 6:30 pm.

This is our regular festive get together which is held in the beautiful church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe, Queen Victoria Street and St. Andrew’s Hill, City of London, EC4V 5DE.

The church, which was built by Sir Christopher Wren is a wonderful historic building and well worth a visit in its own right. Please come and join in our carol singing in English and Slovene.

Catch up with friends after the service as there will be potica (offered by the Society) and Christmas drinks (courtesy of the Embassy).

There is no charge but a collection is taken to support the work of the Barka charity in Slovenia.

All of Britain sweltered in a heat wave the day before, but temperatures were perfect for the British-Slovene Society’s annual picnic on Sunday 30th June at the Oxford Arboretum.

We enjoyed four hours of conversation, good food, drink and games in the neatly mown grass around the kozolec (Slovene hayrack).

Once again, Slovenian Ambassador Tadej Rupel came down from London to celebrate with us.

Renowned Slovene violinist Lana Trotovšek will give a concert at London’s Wigmore Hall with Spanish-Catalan pianist Maria Canyigueral on 22 July at 7.30 pm.

Lana Trotovšek lives in London and is a Professor at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She plays a 1750 Pietro Antonio dalla Costa violin. Maria Canyigueral is one of the leading lights among the new generation of Spanish pianists. She and Trotovšek won a Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards in California for their joint album in 2016 (Hedone Records).
Lucijan Marija Škerjanc is a Slovene late-Romantic, who composed the work to be played in 1934.

Picnic time is approaching again! We warmly invite you to join us from 12 noon to 4.30 p.m. on Sunday 30th June 2019 for our Annual Picnic in the Oxford University Arboretum at Nuneham Courtenay, OX44 9PX. We will meet again by the kozolec (Slovene hay-rack). Bring a picnic, drinks, deckchairs, blankets, your kids, grandchildren and friends. If you make something particularly nice, you may wish to share it with others! We are once again expecting the Slovenian Ambassador in the U.K., Tadej Rupel, to join us.

The Arboretum is situated just south of the village of Nuneham Courtenay on the A4074 road from Reading, eight miles south of Oxford. From London it can be reached by the M40, exit 8, A40 to Oxford, then southwards round the Ring Road (A4142) on to the A4074 towards Reading.

If you come by train to Oxford or Reading, you can take the bus X39/X40 to the Arboretum. If you have problems mail evelina@ferrar.org.uk or call 07584 199 177 and we will do what we can to help.

The Arboretum has kindly agreed to mow the area around the hayrack, but we are not allowed to climb on it. Adults pay £5.45 for entry to the Arboretum, concessions £4. You can pay by cash, credit/debit card or cheque. Children under 16, Members of Oxford University (bring your card) and registered disabled and carers enter for free. Dogs are not allowed.

We must leave by 4:30 pm when the Arboretum closes. If you wish to come earlier, you can do so from 10 am onwards.
We hope we can welcome many of you to enjoy an afternoon around the kozolec – one of the most traditional symbols of Slovenia and its culture.

Round Table: Scientific Cooperation between Britain and Slovenia

Slovenians Educated Abroad will share their experience of scientific cooperation with Slovenia. Representatives from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, ARRS and University of Ljubljana have been invited to attend. They will talk about specific examples of cooperation between Slovenia and Britain and explain procedures for applying for various tenders.
